Beyond the Fold: The True Role of a Master
Origami is often a solitary path. We fold in silence, advance cautiously, and repeat the same gestures in the hope of surpassing ourselves. Yet, sometimes, with a bit of luck, we cross paths with a true Master—someone who does not merely teach a technique but opens a door to a living, vibrant art, infused with soul.

But what is a Master in origami?

Many believe that a Master is someone who commands paper with absolute precision, whose flawless technique captivates and impresses. Many proudly adopt this title, convinced that sheer virtuosity is enough to breathe life into their creations. And yet, no matter how intricate or technically impressive, their models often feel cold, forgettable. Because precision alone is not enough to create Art.

My vision of a Master is different.

A true Master does not merely pass down a technique. If teaching were reduced to that, then even the most skilled student would only reproduce formulas, folding to impress, to prove they can do it "better than others." But their work would remain empty, and their journey would be marked by comparison and dissatisfaction.

The Master’s role goes far beyond that. A Master does not seek to dominate but to reveal. Their focus is not on themselves, but on their students. They teach them to move beyond technical obsession, to fold with their whole being. They guide them to listen to what resonates within, to feel the inner force that brings the paper to life.

True teaching consists of opening a passage in the student's mind, allowing their soul to flow freely through their folds. And it is at that moment that origami ceases to be a mere arrangement of creases and becomes an unforgettable creation, imbued with emotion and spirit.

Thus, the student, no longer folding to impress, finally reaches the essence of the craft: he folds with sincerity an Artwork that emanates grace and inspiration.

Today, among those who create and teach, few truly carry this light. But there is one whose radiance continues to grow, reminding me of what it truly means to be a Master: Syn 李嘉辉
