Has origami become a consumer product like any other?

The access to folding has been widely democratized. How do you consume origami?

Has origami become a consumer product like any other?

We rush to get the latest book that has just come out, we look for a new paper to test, we fill our hard drive with downloaded diagrams that we will never fold... All because the supply is growing. If ten years ago it was still difficult to find diagrams, today access to folding has been largely democratised, with dozens of books being published every month, countless free videos, not to mention the multiplication of online conventions.

It is interesting to ask oneself about one's own relationship to origami consumption. Some will collect diagrams without actually folding them, others will concentrate on a few books a year in order to enjoy each model to the full. Many will probably allow themselves not to finish every book, in order to have the pleasure of discovering other works.

As a publisher/seller, I should position myself in a consumerist logic, publishing the books that work best to maximise sales and quickly move on to another book of the same style. But here's the thing: I've always tried to fight against this consumerist tendency. That's why, from the beginning, I have not hesitated to publish unknown authors or books that are not aimed at breaking sales records, or books with unusual styles (like the next book by Mi Wu) or that are different from what is usually done (Monica Gao's photo book).

What drives me is to make each book timeless, not just a consumer item to be thrown away and forgotten after use. I choose each book first of all for the pleasure I will get from having a daily conversation with an author I admire and for the bond we will form together. Then we will work to give that book a soul, to make it unique. It is this spirit that I want to give to each book that I publish and that you will open.

My wish is that you feel each book as an invitation to travel, that you feel the love and energy that the author and I have put into it.

That this book is not just an object of consumption, but an enchanted parenthesis that we reserve for ourselves.
